Cathedral of Malaga
The Basilica of the Incarnation or popularly known as the Cathedral of Malaga is possibly the most famous monument in Malaga, which is located in front of the Plaza del Obispo and is one of the most valuable Renaissance jewels of Andalusia and Spain. The Cathedral of Malaga is related to what was the Great Mosque. The Cathedral has its origin in 1487, year in which the Arabs were expelled from the city. The exterior architecture is presented by a large baroque doorway and with two towers. One of them fully built that reaches 87 meters in height and the south tower is still unfinished today, reason why it’s socially called as “La Manquita”.
Monument to Torrijos
In the center of the Plaza de la Merced a large obelisk designed by the architect Rafael Mitjana is located and represents the most important municipal monument of the nineteenth century, whose opening date dates from 1842. It’s at this point that the body was concretely buried of General Torrijos and his 48 companions who were shot on the beach of San Andrés in the year 1831 with the intention of promoting the liberal uprising. One of the curiosities of the monument is that the upper block is displaced due to an earthquake that the city suffered in 1884.
Alcazaba of Malaga
It was the first Muslim castle in Malaga, built in the 11th century with the city under the control of the Hammudid dynasty. The name Alcazaba comes from the Arabic al-qasbah, قصبة, meaning “citadel”).

Castle of Gibralfaro
The second Muslim fortress in Malaga is called Castillo de Gibralfaro and it is named after the lighthouse on its peak. Although it was used by Phoenicians and Romans, was Nazarite king Yusuf I in 1340 the one that would turn into fortress of the city this establishment. It was built in a privileged place with views of the entire bay of Malaga. It is undoubtedly one of the best monuments of Malaga to see regarding to the great views that can be obtained from the top of the castle.
Roman theatre
Under the government of Caesar Augustus, the Roman theater of Malaga was built on the I st b.c. It has a modern interpretation center located next to it where you can learn about the life and customs of the time through new technologies. It has also recovered its previous use by offering shows inside. We didn’t really know about it’s existence until 1951, because until then it was covered by what was the House of Culture.
