The English Cemetery
Possibly you didn’t know that in Malaga there is an English cemetery and that it’s located near the bullring. This cemetery attracts hundreds of tourists every day. The cemetery was built in the 19th century in the Cañada de los Ingleses. Part of its interest is found in that it is the first Protestant cemetery in Spain that was built in 1821.
Why are Malaga citizens called “los boquerones”?
Few people in Malaga and even in Spain don’t know why Malaga is called the anchovies (los boquerones), but for the more clueless you will be interested to know that this nickname is because the typical pescaito of the city is the anchovy a delight of Malaga. The coffees
The way to order coffee is another one of the typical things of Malaga that surprises many visitors. This way of ordering coffee goes back to the 50’s where the Central Café originated in the Plaza de la Constitución (very close to the passage of chinitas that we talked about earlier). In the tiles of this bar, the way of ordering coffees in Malaga and its peculiarities is perfectly shown. In Malaga, therefore, you can find varieties that range from the smallest amount of coffee to the largest in the following order: “a cloud, shadow, half, short, half-moon, long, semi-long, solo”.
The biznaga
The biznaga is one of the most iconic symbols of Malaga city. The Biznaga is a bouquet of jasmine that is usually sold in the streets of Malaga on the hot summer nights. It is characterized by a unique smell that gives a beatifull and a unique perfume.
Release of a prisoner every year during Holy Week
One of the greatest curiosities of Malaga and that often surprised many travelers is the release of a prisoner who makes ‘Jesus the Rich’. Each year this Holy Wednesday procession has the hallmark of being able to free a prisoner in a public way every year. This prisoner is chosen among others with sentences without blood or violence and with not very high sentences. The prisoner begins the procession and is released in the Plaza del Obispo and then performs the entire processional journey. This liberation has been carried out year after year in Holy Week since Carlos III took such a distinctive decision, except in the year 2017 where there was problems with the pardon.
The Cenachero
The Cenachero, was a man who sold fish through the streets of the city maintaining the balance between the two dishes of cenachos. Since some years the figure of the Cenachero has been extinguished. But today you can still see a shadow of what were the cenachers with a bronze sculpture, made by the artist from Málaga Jaime Fernández Pimentel in 1968 that is located in the Pedro Luis Alonso Gardens.
